Cyclone Fengal Impacts India: Heavy Rainfall, School Closures, and Relief Efforts


• Cyclone Fengal, after making landfall near Puducherry on November 30th, caused heavy rainfall and flooding, leading to the closure of all schools and colleges in Puducherry on December 3rd, with the Indian Army and NDRF conducting rescue operations for those stranded in inundated areas.

• The cyclone weakened into a low-pressure area but continued to bring torrential downpours to Puducherry and parts of Tamil Nadu, prompting the Puducherry government to announce ₹5,000 relief assistance for each affected ration cardholder and Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister to request ₹2,000 crore in interim relief from the NDRF.

• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued rain alerts for Kerala and Karnataka, with red alerts in five northern Kerala districts and an orange alert for several others, while Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka also anticipated rainfall.

• In anticipation of heavy rainfall, Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka closed all anganwadis and schools up to class 12 on December 3rd as a precautionary measure, highlighting the widespread impact of Cyclone Fengal's remnants across southern India.
