Ethnic violence in Manipur's Jiribam district claims six lives, schools closed for safety

• Manipur's Jiribam district witnessed a surge in ethnic violence on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of six individuals. The violence erupted between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo tribals, leading to retaliatory gunfights and escalating tensions in the region.

• The incident began with the shooting of an elderly Meitei man in Nungchappi village, followed by the killing of five insurgents from the Kuki and Meitei communities. The violence spread to Rashidpur, where intermittent firing continued for several hours, leaving the situation tense.

• This recent outbreak of violence comes after a series of rocket attacks in the state. On Friday, a 70-year-old priest was killed, and five others were injured when suspected militants fired a rocket at the residential compound of a former Chief Minister. Schools across Manipur remained closed on Saturday due to safety concerns for students and teachers.
