The comet Swift-Tuttle's remains, known as the Perseids because of the constellation Perseus from where they appear to emanate, has an orbital period of about 133 years.

One of the most anticipated celestial spectacles of the year, the annual Perseid meteor shower, will reach its climax on the evening of August 12 into the early hours of August 13.

Considering that up to 100 shooting stars are anticipated to sweep across the sky every hour, this year's event looks to be especially stunning.

The Perseids, so called because they appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus, are leftovers from the comet Swift-Tuttle.

The comet, which has a diameter of around 26 kilometers, revolves around the Sun every 133 years. The comet leaves a trail of dust, boulders, and other debris in its wake as it travels around the Sun.
