• Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Vizhinjam International Seaport near Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, on May 2nd, a significant maritime project representing India's first semi-automated trans-shipment port.
• Developed as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with an investment exceeding ₹18,000 crore, Vizhinjam is India's first Greenfield port project initiated by a state government, showcasing a collaboration between the Kerala government, the central government, and Adani Port SEZ.
• Strategically located near major shipping routes, this deep-water port will significantly reduce transit times, boosting Kerala's economy through job creation, trade enhancement, and investment attraction, and acting as a crucial trade gateway between Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
• The port, handled by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) following a 2015 concession agreement, has already seen considerable activity since its commercial launch in July 2024, with 265 ships and 5.48 lakh TEUs processed, highlighting its importance in India's maritime sector and global trade.
