Infectious and Parasitic Diseases Cause Nearly 24% of Deaths in Delhi, According to 2023 Report

 

• A report released by the Delhi government reveals that infectious and parasitic diseases, such as cholera, diarrhea, tuberculosis, and hepatitis B, were responsible for approximately 24% of the 89,000 deaths recorded in the national capital in 2023. Out of the total 88,628 institutional deaths, around 21,000 were attributed to these diseases.

• Cancer and related diseases also contributed significantly to institutional deaths, with 6,054 cases recorded in 2023, marking a 12% increase compared to the 5,409 deaths in 2022. Slow fetal growth, fetal malnutrition and immaturity, pneumonia, septicemia, and hypoxia were the leading causes of institutional deaths among infants.

• The highest number of institutional deaths occurred among individuals aged between 45 and 64 years, accounting for 32.28% of the total deaths. This was followed by individuals aged 65 and above, who made up 29.44% of the institutional deaths.
