Delhi's Air Quality Worsens, Stage 2 of GRAP Invoked

ʉۢ With the air quality index (AQI) in Delhi deteriorating, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has implemented stage two of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to combat pollution.

• The AQI in Delhi reached 317, falling under the "very poor" category, prompting restrictions on the use of coal, firewood, and diesel generator sets in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR).

• Measures include increased mechanical sweeping and water sprinkling on roads, dust control at construction sites, traffic management, and promotion of public transport to reduce private vehicle usage.

• The "Red Light On-Gaadi Off" campaign was launched to encourage drivers to turn off their engines at red lights, while the Delhi government has established a green war room and implemented anti-dust and bio-decomposer initiatives to address pollution.

• Stage 3 and 4 of GRAP will be enforced if the AQI reaches higher levels, involving stricter measures such as restrictions on vehicle movement, construction activities, and potential school closures.
