Vinesh Phogat Secures Historic Silver, Advances to Gold Medal Match in Wrestling at Paris Olympics

 

• Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat defeated Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the women's 50 kg freestyle wrestling semifinal, guaranteeing India its fourth medal at the Paris Olympics 2024.

• Phogat's victory marks the first time an Indian female wrestler has advanced beyond a bronze medal at the Olympics.

• She defeated Japan's Yui Susaki, a four-time World Champion, in the quarterfinals, ending Susaki's 82-match winning streak.

• Phogat also overcame Ukraine's Oksana Livach in the quarterfinals, despite Livach's strong performance.

• Phogat's success comes after years of hard work and activism, including protests against former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
