James Webb Telescope Discovers Carbon Dioxide Ice on Uranus' Moon Ariel

• The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has detected significant amounts of carbon dioxide ice on the surface of Uranus' moon Ariel.

• This discovery is surprising because carbon dioxide typically turns to gas and is lost to space in the frigid temperatures of the Uranian system.

• The origin of the carbon dioxide and other species on Ariel remains uncertain, but thick CO2 ice deposits and potential carbonates suggest some carbon oxides might come from Ariel's interior.
