India's Advanced Nuclear Reactor, Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor, Nears Completion
• India's Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, has received approval to begin nuclear fuel loading and initiate a controlled chain reaction.
• The PFBR marks India's entry into the second stage of its atomic energy program, utilizing spent fuel from existing reactors.
• The reactor will initially use Uranium-Plutonium Mixed Oxide (MOX) fuel and eventually transition to Thorium-232 as a blanket to produce fissile Uranium-233.
• The PFBR is designed with inherent passive safety features and offers advantages in reducing nuclear waste.
• Once operational, India will become the second country after Russia to have a commercially operating Fast Breeder Reactor.
